Inside Murphy Center in Murfreesboro, Sevier County delivered a commanding performance on the state’s biggest stage, defeating Cookeville 61-43 in the TSSAA BlueCross Girls State Championship.

At the heart of that performance was Sevier County center Hannah Madison.

The Smoky Bears’ presence in the middle controlled the paint from start to finish, turning in one of the most impactful interior performances of the night. Madison finished with 13 points on 5-of-13 shooting, but her influence stretched well beyond the scoring column.

Madison also dominated the glass, pulling down 8 rebounds, including 3 offensive rebounds that helped Sevier County create second-chance opportunities and keep pressure on Cookeville throughout the night.

Her defensive impact was just as important.

Madison anchored the Smoky Bears’ interior defense with 2 blocks and 1 steal, making life difficult for Cookeville any time the Cavaliers tried to challenge Sevier County near the rim. Her activity and length helped shut down easy looks in the lane and forced Cookeville into tougher possessions.

That defensive control showed up clearly in one of the game’s biggest numbers. Sevier County outscored Cookeville 34-14 in the paint, a major reason the Smoky Bears were able to pull away and stay in control for most of the night.

Offensively, Madison’s ability to establish position early gave Sevier County a reliable option around the basket. Her finishes helped the Smoky Bears maintain rhythm and balance, especially as they built separation heading into the second half.

By the time the fourth quarter arrived, Sevier County had fully taken over.

The Smoky Bears led for 27 minutes of the game, using physical inside play, efficient execution, and a balanced scoring attack to create distance on the scoreboard. Sevier County also shot an impressive 47.7 percent from the field, while holding Cookeville to just 32.7 percent shooting.

While several players played major roles in the championship win, Madison’s work inside helped establish the tone on both ends of the floor. In state tournament games, teams often need a player willing to handle the physical battles, protect the rim, and control the boards.

On this night in Murfreesboro, Hannah Madison did exactly that.
