Romel Koon Interview with Tray and Coach Daniel of Triple Threat Sportscast

Brentwood Academy is heading back to a state championship after a statement win over Christ Presbyterian Academy, and junior defensive back Romel Koon Jr is one of the names you keep hearing when people talk about why this team is so hard to score on.

Koon has stepped into a big role in the Eagles secondary and become the type of corner every coach wants. He has length, confidence, and the mentality to live on an island against an opponent’s top receiver.

From Chattanooga Prep to Brentwood Academy

Before he suited up for Brentwood Academy, Koon first made noise at Chattanooga Preparatory School, where he stood out as a two sport athlete in football and basketball. Early on he showed the same traits he plays with now. Long frame, smooth movement, and a natural feel for finding the football.

At Chattanooga Prep he produced on both sides of the ball and picked off multiple passes, proving he could make plays on the back end of a defense. That early success put him on the radar as one of the more interesting young defensive backs in Tennessee.

The move to Brentwood Academy ahead of the 2025 season took his profile to another level. Now lining up against bigger, faster receivers week after week, Koon has held his own and embraced the challenge that comes with playing in one of the toughest schedules in the state.

Impact On Brentwood Academy’s Defense

In his first season with the Eagles, Koon has helped stabilize the back end of a defense that leans on physicality and speed. Coaches trust him to handle man coverage, sit in zone, or trigger on quick routes underneath.

In the semifinal win over Christ Presbyterian Academy, Koon once again showed why he is so valuable. His coverage helped limit big plays on the perimeter and allowed Brentwood Academy to stay aggressive with its front seven. When you can ask a corner to handle his side without constant safety help, it opens up everything for the rest of the defense.

Koon’s presence gives Brentwood Academy flexibility. They can roll coverages away from him, send pressure, and trust that he will compete on every snap. That is a big reason this team is walking into championship week with real confidence.

Recruiting Profile And Offers

On the recruiting side, Romel Koon Jr is already one of the most talked about defensive backs in the class of 2027.

  • Listed by recruiting services around 6 feet to 6 foot 1 with a lean, athletic frame
  • Ranked among the rising cornerbacks in his class in both Tennessee and nationally
  • Evaluated as a Power Four level defensive back with a high ceiling

Koon has already picked up 30 plus Division I offers, including interest and visits from multiple Power Four programs. Coverage has mentioned trips to places like Louisville and Indiana, while schools such as Mississippi State and SMU have also offered. He has also drawn attention from national powers like Alabama. That confirms how highly college staffs view his upside at corner.

With two years of high school ball still in front of him, that offer list and ranking profile both have plenty of room to climb.

Where His Game Is Right Now

Right now, Koon’s game can be summed up pretty simply.

  • True outside corner who can line up across from a WR1
  • Comfortable in press and off coverage
  • Long arms and quick feet that help him recover and close windows
  • Physical at the line and willing to tackle
  • Confident, competitive, and calm when the ball is in the air

He already checks a lot of boxes for college coaches. As he continues to grow into his frame, refine his technique, and stack more big game reps like the win over CPA, his stock will only rise.

Brentwood Academy is chasing a state title. Romel Koon Jr is one of the major reasons why.
