White House-Heritage boys varsity leaned on toughness, discipline, and interior presence Friday night to secure a 52–44 win over a physical Whites Creek squad. It was not a pretty game, but it was a mature one.
After the final buzzer, Triple Threat Sportscast in caught up with White House-Heritage center Avery Coles to talk about battling through contact, staying composed, and handling the frustrations that come with playing against an aggressive defense.
Physical Night in the Paint
From the opening tip, Whites Creek made it clear they were going to challenge White House-Heritage inside. The paint was crowded, the contact was constant, and every post touch came with resistance.
At seven feet tall and 280 pounds, Avery Coles drew plenty of attention, often facing double teams and heavy body contact on nearly every possession.
When asked whether the physicality ever became frustrating, Coles was honest in his response.
“It does get frustrating,” Coles said. “But you’ve got to keep a calm demeanor. As a big in high school, you usually don’t get the favorable calls you want from the refs. You just have to put your head down and focus on every possession.”
Poise Over Pressure
Rather than letting frustration dictate his play, Coles stayed locked in on the details. He ran the floor, sealed defenders, and stayed active defensively, anchoring White House-Heritage on both ends.
That composure proved critical in a game where neither team found sustained offensive rhythm.
Second-Half Control
As the game moved into the second half, White House-Heritage began to separate by doing the small things right. They controlled the glass, limited second-chance points, and took better care of the basketball.
Defensively, the Patriots forced tough shots and made Whites Creek work deep into the shot clock. That discipline allowed White House-Heritage to maintain a steady lead late and close the game out at the free-throw line.
Big-Man Leadership
The 52–44 final score reflected a grind-it-out win built on patience and maturity. Avery Coles’ mindset embodied the tone White House-Heritage needed in a physical matchup.
By staying calm, accepting the physicality, and focusing on each possession, Coles helped his team weather the pressure and come away with a hard-earned victory.
